Two of America's most respected politicians have backed President George W Bush's campaign for re-election.
Senator John McCain and the former Mayor of New York, Rudolph Giuliani, praised Mr Bush's leadership yesterday at the Republican Party's New York convention.
Mr McCain, a Vietnam war veteran, dismissed any suggestion that the President's fight against terrorism was unjustified.
Meanwhile, the former mayor said Mr Bush's reaction to the 11 September attacks had already earned him a place in history as a great American President.
Nearly 5,000 delegates gathered under heavy security for the event's opening night yesterday at Madison Square Garden.
The four-day convention will see President Bush officially endorsed as the party's candidate in the presidential election in November.
He will address the convention on Thursday.
