The powerful Typhoon Chaba has struck southern Japan, generating wind speeds of up to 130mph and unleashing torrential rain.
At least five people have been killed, more than 50 have been injured and four others are missing.
Some 300,000 households in the southernmost island of Kyushu have lost their electricity supply.
6,000 people are reported to have fled their homes for emergency shelters.
