Spectator disrupts final Olympic event

The final big sporting event of the Olympic games in Athens, the men's marathon, has been disrupted by a spectator.

In the closing stages of the race, a man ran across the road and pushed the leading runner, Vanderlei de Lima from Brazil, into the crowd.

He kept on running but lost his lead to Stefano Baldini of Italy, who went on to win the gold medal. The man was arrested.

A government spokesman said he was a former Irish priest who interrupted the British Formula One Grand Prix last year by running on to the Silverstone track.

The International Olympics Committee has announced de Lima will be presented with a medal named after the founder of the modern Olympics in recognition of his 'exceptional demonstration of fair play and Olympic values'.
