Insurgents armed with rocket propelled grenades fought fierce clashes with US soldiers in northern Iraq today.
35 civilians caught in the crossfire were injured.
The US military said it killed two of the attackers in the clashes around Tal Afar near the city of Mosul.
Police said two separate US convoys were attacked, prompting the Americans to return fire heavily.
Police said some of the civilians were seriously wounded.
