A second report has been published today into the abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad.

According to the report, 27 military intelligence specialists 'encouraged' or 'participated' in abuses of inmates at Abu Ghraib prison.

It said that from July 2003 to February of this year military intelligence personnel allegedly requested, encouraged, condoned or solicited military police personnel to abuse detainees and violated established interrogation procedures at the prison.

Yesterday, a report by the former US Defence Secretary, James Schlesinger, found no evidence of an official policy of abuse by senior Bush administration officials.

The Abu Ghraib scandal surfaced in April when photographs of hooded and naked Iraqi prisoners being maltreated first came to light.
