Heavy rainfall causes Clontarf flooding

A number of homes and businesses in Clontarf on Dublin's northside suffered flood damage following heavy rainfall last night.

The flooding occurred after what gardaí described as a 'torrential shower' hit the Clontarf area at around 8pm. The rainfall lasted for around 30 minutes.

Drains were not able to cope with the heavy shower and became blocked. Manhole covers removed themselves as surface water caused the Clontarf Road and surrounding roads to be blocked for a number of hours.

Up to a dozen homes at locations including Seafield Road, Vernon Avenue and Kincora Court were affected by water damage. All roads are now clear and locals are drying out their homes.

Noting more heavy rain is forecast, local Fine Gael Councillor Gerry Breen has called for flood defences to be strengthened in the area.
