US President George W Bush has called for advertisements attacking Senator John Kerry's war record in Vietnam to be stopped along with others run by independent groups.
The Democratic Party's presidential candidate had called the ads inaccurate.
Mr Kerry had accused the 'Swift Boat Veterans for Truth' group of being a front for the Bush campaign.
The White House had earlier refused to call specifically for the ads to be withdrawn, but Mr Bush said Senator Kerry had served 'admirably' in Vietnam.
