The authorities in Pakistan say they have foiled a plot by suspected al-Qaeda members to carry out a wave of suicide attacks on the country's political leaders and public buildings.

The security forces have arrested about 12 alleged conspirators and are still seeking several others.

They say that among the targets were the Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf, and the US embassy in the capital, Islamabad.
