Violent clashes in Georgia over oil pipeline

There were violent clashes in Georgia last night when demonstrators protested against the construction of a $3 billion oil pipeline that will run from Azerbaijan through Georgia to Turkey.

Five policemen were reported to have been injured when stones were thrown by the protesters.

Environmental groups have expressed concerns that the pipeline poses an ecological threat to the renowned mineral water springs in the Borjomi valley.

The pipeline is scheduled to begin pumping its first oil by the second half of next year.
