The Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, has approved the construction of 1,000 new homes in Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
The move is seen as an attempt to placate right-wing opponents within Mr Sharon's Likud party over his intention to withdraw from the Gaza Strip.
The building plan had been frozen earlier this month after criticism from the United States.
