A major rescue operation has been continuing in southern England to airlift up to 1,000 people from a flood-ravaged coastal community.

Dozens of people stranded on rooftops and in cars were winched to safety from the village of Boscastle on the north Cornwall coast.

Around 30 vehicles were swept into the harbour and two village buildings collapsed in the torrential rains. Around 50 people were trapped in their vehicles by debris-loaded water.

Police in Devon and Cornwall said there have been no reports of serious casualties.
