SEHB in warning over shellfish toxins

People are being warned against eating shellfish collected directly from the Waterford and Wexford coastline due to the presence of poisonous toxins.

The warning from the South Eastern Health Board does not apply to shellfish produced commercially.

The health board says that, following the discovery of a large quantity of the potentially illness-producing algae off the southeast coast, it had no option but to issue the warning.

It only applies to shellfish collected on beaches and strands by individuals and not to commercially-produced mussels, oysters, clams and scallops.

The affected shellfish can cause severe gastric troubles.
