Gunman kills Israeli settler near Nablus

A Palestinian gunman has opened fire at the entrance to a Jewish settlement in the West Bank, fatally injuring one settler before being shot dead by Israeli troops.

The Israeli army said the settler was shot in the back at the Itamar enclave near the city of Nablus, the biggest stronghold of militants in the West Bank.

He died later in hospital.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.
