Jurys' workers to discuss demolition plan

The 220 hotel workers directly affected by plans by Jurys Doyle to demolish its hotel on the Western Road in Cork, are to meet tomorrow afternoon.

According to SIPTU's Tom O'Driscoll, it is to pick a negotiating team to broker redundancy and severance packages for its members.

On Monday, the group announced plans to demolish the Western Road hotel and, in a joint initiative with O'Callaghan Properties, build a new 185-bedroom facility and 300 apartments.

Staff have been told that during demolition and construction they can either be relocated within the company, take early retirement where appropriate, or possibly take redundancy. They will also be offered positions in the new hotel when it opens.

The hotel employs 110 people full time and up to 130 more on part-time or casual contracts.

If planning permission is granted in October, building work is due to begin in early 2005.
