Killybegs issues Govt with 'wake-up call'

The Killybegs Community Council has issued what it says is a 'wake-up call' to the Government over the loss of 350 jobs in the fishing industry in Donegal.

The council Chairman, Tadgh Gallagher, said the area was being destroyed by stealth and State neglect.

Speaking as the Killybegs Fishermen's Organisation marked its 25th anniversary, Mr Gallagher said that if the same number of jobs were lost in any other industry there would be State assistance.

He accused the Government of doing nothing to help the fishing industry.

Local business people say the effects of the job losses are already being felt in the town. They are worried about a worsening situation in the autumn and winter ahead.
