The Green Party has called for an investigation into how taxpayers came to pay €30m for the clean up of environmental problems caused by the former Irish Steel plant.

The plant, which is located in Cork Harbour, is responsible for dumps of radioactive waste and toxic scrap materials.

The party has also claimed that it has found previously undisclosed information which shows that the entire plant sale deal and clean-up could cost the State up to €70m.

The Government sold the plant to the Indian ISPAT company in May 1996.
