Leaving Certificate - Call to allow deferrals

The National Parents' Council has called on the Minister for Education to press ahead with proposals to allow Leaving Cert students to defer their examinations for three months in special circumstances.

The council's Vice President Marian Lyon said that Noel Dempsey had a duty to come to the aid of students who, because of bereavement, personal injury or some other special set of circumstances, were unable to sit exams in a satisfactory state.

Ms Lyon said some of the most appalling cases had come to light this year where students with genuine problems were forced to sit exams.

She said she knew of one case where a girl who had just completed three exams was unable to even read the papers for her fourth because of an allergy, yet was unable to get special assistance and was refused the right to defer the examination.
