The 60th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, in which soldiers of Poland's Home Army rose up against the Nazis, was commemorated today.

Some 200,000 Poles were killed in 63 days of fighting during which the Soviet Army, which was on outskirts of the city, failed to intervene.

Ceremonies were led by veterans of the uprising and attended by thousands of Poles from around the world.

Among the guests was the German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, who became the first German leader to attend Poland's annual commemorations.

Poland's Prime Minister, Marek Belka, urged Britain and its allies to apologise for failing to do enough to help the Polish resistance.
