Bank of Ireland has warned customers that there has been a rise in attempted fraud incidents involving counterfeit bank drafts and cheques over the past year.
The bank said the fraudsters are responding to advertisements for goods or services for sale.
Having agreed to purchase the goods or services, the fraudster then gives or sends a counterfeit cheque or bank draft for a sum often in excess of the agreed amount, requiring the customer to refund any surplus monies by return.
The bank has advised customers to be vigilant when placing advertisements for sale, and before refunding excess monies or releasing goods paid for by bank draft/cheque from unknown persons.
It says customers should ensure that the item in question has been paid for by the bank on which it is drawn.
