Explosion in Gaza refugee camp

An explosion has damaged a house in the Shatti refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, injuring two people.

The cause of the blast is not clear. It happened at the house of a family linked to militant groups, suggesting it might have been caused when explosives detonated prematurely.

There was no sign of Israeli helicopters or aircraft flying overhead at the time.

Arafat reinstates security chief

Earlier, the Palestinian President, Yasser Arafat, reinstated a security chief whom he had replaced with his own cousin causing turmoil in the Gaza Strip.

Abdel-Razek al-Majaideh will replace Moussa Arafat, whose appointment to the post on Saturday triggered clashes which left dozens wounded.

At least 12 Palestinians were injured in overnight violence in Gaza as gunmen opposed to the Arafat appointment exchanged fire with Palestinian security forces in the town of Rafah.

At least 18 people were wounded in fighting yesterday between militants and forces loyal to Moussa Arafat.

The Prime Minister, Ahmed Qurei, has meanwhile insisted that his offer of resignation over the worsening security situation still stands despite Mr Arafat's earlier rejection of it.
