Libya has agreed to open a new road corridor across the Sahara desert to speed up the delivery of relief supplies to refugees from the Darfur region in western Sudan.
The UN World Food Programme has signed an agreement with the Libyan government under which the first road convoy will make the 2,000-mile journey next month.
The WFP says it hopes aid will now reach all of the 1m people forced from their homes by the Sudanese conflict within the next few weeks.
It says a lack of infrastructure in the region, together with continued fighting, has been a major difficulty in getting aid to victims.
