A mortar attack on a house in Baghdad has killed a six-year-old Iraqi boy and wounded at least three others.

Police said that the shells hit a house near the Sadeer Hotel, which is often used by foreigners.

The three people injured were said to have been security guards for the hotel.

In a similar attack a week ago, several rockets struck the nearby Sheraton and Palestine hotels, which are the main hotels for foreign journalists and business people in the Iraqi capital.

Separately, investigations are continuing to try to find out what happened to the Lebanese-born US marine who disappeared in Iraq three weeks ago but turned up safe and well at the US embassy in Beirut.

Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun, 24, was reported at one stage to have been beheaded by militants.

US defence department officials have been interviewing him.

The marine's family, who live in Salt Lake City in Utah, have been allowed to make contact with him.
