Attempts to avoid ESB strike action

High-level contacts between ESB unions, management, and the government are to take place tomorrow morning in an attempt to avert strikes at the power company on Monday.

The National Implementation Body - which oversees industrial relations problems - has convened the meetings government buildings.

Among the topics for discussion will be union concerns about a pay rise, a deficit in the company's pension fund of half a billion euro, and the union demand for a 20% stake in the company.

If tomorrow's initiative fails, the ESB Officers Association, which represents 2,300 of the company's 8,000 workers, are likely to go ahead with their strike.
