Gilmartin told 'shocking lie': O'Callaghan

A Cork developer has claimed that Tom Gilmartin told 'a shocking lie' to the Mahon Tribunal about a buyout agreement.

Owen O'Callaghan said Mr Gilmartin failed to pay a final instalment of a £3.5m deal and lied about the terms of the contract.

Mr O’Callaghan said Mr Gilmartin signed an agreement with him in 1989 to buy out his interest in land at Balgaddy which had already been zoned retail.

However, he said, despite numerous extensions, Mr Gilmartin failed to come up with the deal’s final instalment of £1.3m.

Mr O'Callaghan said there was nothing in the agreement that the buyout was subject to Mr Gilmartin getting planning permission for Quarryvale.

In his statement to the Mahon Tribunal, Mr O’Callaghan confirmed that Mr Gilmartin had complained to him about a demand for £100,000 from a Fianna Fáil councillor in Buswell's Hotel.

Mr O’Callaghan also said Mr Gilmartin had complained generally about corruption in the Dublin planning process but that he himself had no 'familiarity' with this.

Mr O'Callaghan later went on to take over the Quarryvale project and build the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre.
