The Tánaiste Mary Harney has said the forging of the Taoiseach's signature on a letter sent out by a Fianna Fáil councillor could be a matter for the gardaí.
Ms Harney was responding in the Dáil to the Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny, who raised a number of recent ethical lapses.
They included the admission yesterday by Wexford County Councillor Lorcan Allen that he had distributed a letter purporting to be from the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.
Ms Harney said that forging somebody's signature is a serious offence.
A Fianna Fáil internal investigation into the matter is continuing.
