Explosion rips through military post in Gaza

One Israeli is believed to have been killed and at least five others wounded in an attack on a military base in the southern Gaza Strip tonight.

Rescue workers initially reported dozens of casualties in the explosion, but later revised their figures down after medics arrived at the scene.

The Palestinian radical groups Hamas and Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades have claimed responsibility for the attack in which explosives were detonated in a tunnel dug under the army post.

A short time later, Israeli troops shot dead two Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Witnesses said the Palestinians were killed at the town of Khan Younis, not far from where the military post was blown up.

Military sources claimed there had been heavy exchanges of gunfire in the area.
