The VHI is to seek an increase in the cost of health insurance premiums. The company has notified the Minister for Health that it intends to increase premiums by 3.8% for its hospital A to E plans and 2.5% for option plans from the first of September.

VHI Chief Executive Vincent Sheridan said the increase was significantly lower than the cost of medical inflation.

Micheál Martin has 30 days to accept or reject the company's request.
