Baghdad - Car bomb blast

Six Iraqi civil defence soldiers were killed and four injured in a car bomb attack north of Baghdad hours after a suicide bomber struck at an army recruitment centre in the capital.

The second bomb exploded at about 9.50am Irish time, outside the front of a council building in Yethrib, north of the capital.

At least 35 people are now reported to have been killed in the earlier car bomb attack in western Baghdad.

A further 140 people were injured in the blast, which happened at an Iraqi army recruitment centre.

The centre is near Muthanna Airbase, the city’s former airport where US troops are now based.

A police spokesman said the car, packed with artillery shells, exploded at the gates of the recruitment centre after being driven into a crowd of about 100 people queuing to volunteer.

The same centre was the target of a similar bombing in February, in which 47 people were killed.
