Three killed in attack on US base in Iraq

The US military says a rocket attack on a US base north of Baghdad today killed three US soldiers and wounded at least 25 people. The attack targeted the Anaconda base near Balad.

According to a US army statement, seven of the wounded were treated at the medical clinic at the camp and 14 had to be evacuated to a combat support hospital near Balad.

6 Iraqis arrested following bomb attack

Meanwhile, US Marines have arrested six members of the Iraqi Civil Defence Corp on suspicion of involvement in a roadside bomb attack in western Iraq that injured five locals.

The six, along with an Iraqi civilian who ran out of a nearby building carrying hand grenades after the blast in eastern Ramadi, 100km west of Baghdad, were taken to a coalition base for questioning.

In a separate development, the Iraqi resistance leader Moqtada al-Sadr has told all members of his Mehdi army militia who are not from Najaf to leave the holy city.

Mr Sadr issued a statement calling on his militiamen to go home to 'do their duty'. He agreed to a truce this month after weeks of fighting with the occupying forces in Najaf and Karbala.
