Tributes have been paid to Mairin Lynch, the widow of the late Taoiseach, Jack Lynch, who died last night at the age of 87.
Mrs Lynch, who married Jack Lynch in 1946, was always regarded as his closest adviser.
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, who is at the G8 summit in the United States, said Mrs Lynch was a stalwart during decades of political challenge.
Mr Ahern said she was by Jack Lynch's side throughout his public career and both of them were wonderful ambassadors for Ireland.
The Tánaiste, Mary Harney, said Mrs Lynch always demonstrated great political instinct and was never afraid to speak out.
Mr Lynch died in October, 1999.
