Beaches - Six lose Blue Flag status

Six beaches in Mayo, Galway and Cork have lost their Blue Flag status.

However, Dublin and Wicklow have significantly increased the quality of their bathing water.

The number of Irish beaches to secure Blue Flags has remained the same as last year at 73.

The key to securing a Blue Flag is eliminating litter, eradicating pollution and ensuring there is no human or animal sewage.

Kerry comes out top of the class this year with 13 of its beaches securing the Blue Flag. 12 beaches in Donegal were awarded Blue Flag status.

In Dublin, Portrane and Killiney will join Seapoint on the Blue Flag list. In Wicklow, Brittas Bay has made a comeback after losing its position last year.

Mayo lost three blue flags including the premier site at Achill, while Galway lost two flags, including one in Spiddal. Cork lost one flag at Rosscarbery.
