Seventeen Iraqi civilians have been wounded in clashes between US soldiers and gunmen in a western district of Mosul in the north of the country.
A US military spokesman said the soldiers had just defused a bomb and were preparing to pull out when they came under fire from a group of gunmen.
The civilians were caught up in the gunbattle.
Separately, a US soldier was killed and two others were wounded in a roadside bombing near Iskandariyah, 40 km south of Baghdad, according to a coalition spokesperson.
Earlier, an arms depot belonging to the militia of radical Shi'ite cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr, exploded near a mosque in the Shi'ite town of Kufa, killing two people and wounding 12.
The US army said its forces were not operating in the area at the time.
