Chinese communities around the world have marked the 15th anniversary of the Chinese government's violent crackdown on pro-democracy protestors in Tiananmen Square.

Hundreds if not thousands of people died when troops opened fire on unarmed demonstrators in June 1989.

The square itself was swamped by police and security forces all day, but a few individual demonstrators managed to make protests before being dragged away.

The anniversary was not marked by any official events in mainland China but in Hong Kong thousands of people attended a vigil.

In Taiwan, the Prime Minister, Yu Shyi-kun, said there had been no obvious improvement in human rights protection on the mainland after what he called the 'tragic incident'.
