US President George W Bush has announced that he has accepted the resignation of CIA Director, George Tenet.

In a hastily convened public appearance on the south lawn of the White House, Mr Bush said, ‘He told me he was resigning for personal reasons. I told him I'm sorry he's leaving.'

Mr Bush added that Mr Tenet had done a superb job.

John McLoughlan, the Deputy Head of the CIA, is reported to be taking over in the interim.

Mr Bush made the announcement shortly after a meeting with the visiting Australian Prime Minister, John Howard.
