Calls made in NI for peaceful summer

Two leading members of the DUP have tonight called on all those with influence to work for a peaceful summer in the North.

The statement by Belfast MP's and MLA's, Peter Robinson and Nigel Dodds has been welcomed by the Taoiseach, who will meet the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair in London tomorrow.

The two DUP MLA's say it is in the interests of all the people of Northern Ireland to have a peaceful summer.

They state that the unionist community can gain nothing by being drawn into activities which threaten lives and livelihoods.

And they call on all those in any position of influence to do all in their power to bring about a quiet summer.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, welcomed what he called a very clear statement and said it is a very encouraging development.

He praised the work being done at community level by loyalists and republicans and said a quiet summer could assist the collective efforts being made to advance political progress.

The Sinn Fein president, Gerry Adams, also welcomed the Robinson and Dodds statement.
