Workers at Tara Mines plan strike action

Workers at Tara Mines are planning to down tools for three days in a strike that management claim will lead to the suspension of operations and put 660 jobs in jeopardy.

The strike action is planned for Tuesday next.

Some 220 workers at Europe's biggest zinc are taking the  action in a dispute over welfare issues, union leaders said this afternoon.

The mine, near Navan, was bought by Sweden's Boliden from Finnish group Outokumpu late last year.

John Regan branch secretary of SIPTU said the dispute centred on demands for a sick-pay scheme, improved pension benefits and increased annual leave.
