Civil defence officials in Haiti and the Dominican Republic now estimate that more than 600 people have died from floods and mudslides caused by torrential rain.

Hundreds of people are missing and up to 13,000 are still homeless.

The two countries share the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, which has borne the brunt of ten days of severe storms across much of the region.

The worst affected area is the town of Jimani on the Dominican border.
