The second largest mutual society offering insurance to doctors in Ireland is to withdraw from providing secure cover for consultants engaged in private practice.
The Medical Defence Union told RTÉ News that its decision was a consequence of the introduction by the Government of a new indemnity scheme for doctors last February.
It says this has led to an unsustainably large rise in subscriptions.
The decision means consultants engaged solely in private practice will only be able to avail of discretionary cover in the future.
