Poll shows election losses for FF, FG

An opinion poll published in today's Sunday Business Post shows the Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael parties may face seat losses in the upcoming local and European elections.

Fianna Fáil support is at 32% in both elections, indicating inevitable seat losses on local authorities and a tough battle to hold its six seats in Europe.

Fine Gael has 22% support in the local elections, and 21% in the European, so while it will also shed councillors, it could realistically hope to retain four MEPs.

Labour has 12% in both contests and should pick up local seats, as should the PDs with 4% support.  That party also has 4% in the European election, despite not running any candidates.

The Greens have 7% in the locals and 10% in the European, while Sinn Féin are on 11% in the local elections and 9% in the European. Others stand at 12% for both polls.

There are some signs of public disquiet on the citizenship referendum, with two thirds of voters thinking it should be postponed for further debate, although 55% say they will definitely vote in favour of the change to the consitution.

This suggests it should be passed comfortably, although perhaps not by as big a margin as some had anticipated.
