The company running Dublin's new Luas light rail system, Connex Transport, has announced details of fares and timetables.

The first route to open will be the Green Line, from Sandyford to Stephen's Green. Services will begin from the end of June.

Connex said the single fare from Sandyford to the city centre will be €2, and €3.80 for a return fare.

The minimum fare from stop to stop will be €1.30 and 80 cent for a child.

Trams on the Green line will operate 19 hours a day on weekdays, starting at 5.30am, with the last tram at 12.30am.

On Saturdays the service will start at 6.30am and 7.30 on Sunday mornings.

Each of the 14 trams running on the Green line will have 80 seats and a capacity of 300.

The Red Line from Tallaght to Connolly Station will open in August.

RTÉ News learned today that the operators of Luas will run a free weekend for families on the Saturday and Sunday after the formal opening of both lines.
