Anglers urged to wear lifejackets

The Marine Casualty Investigation Board has recommended that lifejackets and adequate clothing should be worn by anglers at all times.

It also says that a full and detailed weather forecast for the intended area should be obtained prior to departure.

In a report published yesterday, the board found that an angler who lost his life on Lough Mask in Co Mayo last year was not wearing a lifejacket and did not have adequate warm clothing to try to ward off hypothermia.

However, in the case of another marine casualty off Blackrock in Co Cork last year, the board found that a man drowned when his lifejacket did not inflate properly.
