Israeli troops backed by helicopter gunships are reported to have raided a neighbourhood of Gaza City and exchanged fire with gunmen.
There were no immediate reports of casualties in the neighbourhood, which is known as a Palestinian militant stronghold.
Witnesses said it appeared the soldiers, who sped into the area in jeeps and were later joined by tanks, were on an operation to detain wanted men.
