Mayo TD, Beverley Flynn, has been expelled from the Fianna Fáil party.
The vote on the motion at last night's meeting of the party's National Executive was 81 for expulsion and five against.
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, spoke at length in support of the motion.
Afterwards, Ms Flynn criticised the procedures of the meeting, suggesting she could have secured more support if there had been a secret ballot.
