Toll firm calls for M50 upgrade

National Toll Roads has demanded that the upgrade of Dublin's M50 motorway receive immediate attention after the release of new figures showing rising traffic volumes at the West-Link toll bridge.

The quarterly figures show that traffic at the West-Link increased by 9% or 98,000 vehicles.

In a statement, NTR said that traffic would increase still further over the summer with record traffic volumes anticipated for July and August.

The company said its Eazy Pass electronic payment system had speeded up throughput at the tollbooths and this service would be expanded.

On 2 March a record 7,800 vehicles were processed in one hour through the West-Link.

Traffic at the West-Link toll facility has shown a significant increase since the opening of the second West-Link Bridge in September 2003.
