The White House has announced that it is lifting many of the economic sanctions in place against Libya.

It is the latest reward to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi for his decision to abandon Libya's weapons of mass destruction programmes and turn over documentation.

It means that American oil companies can resume operations there. They have been barred from operating in Libya since 1980.
