The President of SIPTU, Jack O'Connor, has indicated that his union is not yet prepared to re-enter national pay talks on the second phase of Sustaining Progress.

Mr O'Connor said he needed clear indication that issues relating to employment security and quality in the public transport sector would be addressed by the Government before the union participated in any other talks.

Mr O’Connor made the comments in a speech delivered at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.

Last month, SIPTU refused to participate in the next round of partnership talks, effectively leaving them on hold.

The refusal followed comments made by the Tánaiste, Mary Harney, on the importance of public sector reforms to the coalition.
