Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte has said that his party in Government would endow each child born here with a €1,000 bond which would accumulate interest until adulthood.
Addressing his party conference in Dublin, Mr Rabbitte also told delegates that he would work with other democratic parties in the Dáil to replace the current government.
He attacked the government parties, saying they had presided over a boom where inequalities in personal income and between different regions had grown wider.
Earlier, the Labour Party conference heard sustained criticism of the Government's proposed referendum on citizenship.
Delegates claimed that it is being held for party political reasons. Labour's Party member and MEP, Proinsias de Rossa, said it was a 'tawdry election stunt'.
Senator Brendan Ryan, candidate for Europe in the South constituency, said a letter from SDLP leader Mark Durkan showed the Government had chosen racism over nationalism.
Party President Michael D Higgins said the referendum was a shameful and disgraceful attempt to exploit the 'politics of fear', and would turn the Good Friday Agreement a political football.
Campaigner awarded at conference
Meanwhile, a leading campaigner has strongly criticised the Government's failure to look after emigrants' interests.
Father Paul Byrne, former Director of the Episcopal Commission for Emigrants, was speaking at the Labour Party conference, where he received an award for his pursuit of justice.
