Insurance companies are now investigating 1,500 cases of bogus claims since setting up their fraud hotline.
An industry spokesman said the success of the scheme shows that people have had enough of insurance fraud that is costing up to €100 million a year.
The hotline has been in existence for over a year and, backed up by advertising campaigns, is receiving around 20 calls a day.
At least 1,500 of these have resulted in insurance companies taking an interest in a particular claim. Usually the tip-off will concern a staged or non-existent accident or some form of exaggeration.
Over 80% involve motor cases or other cases of personal injury.
Men are nearly twice as likely to complain as women and calls can either come from a work colleague, family member or even someone who overhears a conversation on the street.
