73 killed in Ivory Coast violence

At least 73 people have been reported killed in three days of violence in Ivory Coast's main city Abidjan.

Trouble in the economic capital of the world's biggest cocoa producer started on Thursday when security forces cracked down on an attempted opposition rally.

It was the most serious violence in Abidjan since a September 2002 failed coup triggered civil war in the West African country.

The war, in which thousands were killed and more than a million people displaced, was declared over last July. However, the country remains split between a rebel-held north and a government-controlled south.

Diplomats say the latest bloodshed has left the peace process in tatters.
