27 killed in explosion at Baghdad hotel

A suspected al Qaeda-linked car bomb destroyed a Baghdad hotel and neighbouring houses in the heart of the Iraqi capital, killing 27 people and wounding about 40.

A number of people are reported to be trapped under the rubble of the Mount Lebanon Hotel in the Karrada district of the Iraqi capital.

Iraqi officials said most of the victims were Iraqis.

The US administration insisted the blast would not derail plans for a democratic Iraq.
